Although Trevor asked me not to wait up for him, I couldn’t help but do just that. Obviously his mother had managed to get to him and he believed her word to mine. Mrs. Gibson had wrongly perceived what I had told her, and was now making out my condolences to her as an accusation. Of course she would tell Trevor. She was just searching for an excuse to distance us from each other.
My thoughts were disturbed by a faint thud coming from downstairs, followed by a soft curse. In moments, Trevor stumbled through the bedroom door, his hands around two of his workmates.
“What—” I stop instantly realizing. “How much did he drink?”
“No idea, ma’am. Already hammered when he walked in,” the man on his right—Jacob, I think—said. “He’s pretty darn upset. Tried to drink himself to death.”
“I can see that. Just put him on the bed, please. I’ll take care of him. Thank you for bringing him back.”
“It’s our pleasure ma’am,” Jacob said.
They put the muttering Trevor on the bed and walked out after wishing me a good night. From the looks of Trevor, it doesn’t seem like it would be.
I move over to Trevor, who’s moaning about Lord only knows what. I take off his shoes, socks, and his hat pretty easily, so I assumed that the alcohol had finally put him under. But when I was about to reach for the buttons of his shirt he suddenly caught both my hand in both of his.
“You wanna know somethin’, Belle?” he asks.
“Sure,” I say warily.
“Yer really pretty,” he says, words slurring.
“Thank—”
“But I wish you didn’t hurt my mother. I love my Mum, although she is awful to you, I still love her. And I want you and her to get along so we can all be one happy family…” he says his voice trailing off.
“So you know how she treats me then?”
“Of course,” he says, closing his eyes. “I heard you and her speak in the kitchen that day—you know, when she said she made me breakfast. I know she was lying because she hasn’t cooked for me in years…and because your cooking is so different….so Belle.”
“Trevor, if you knew all this, do you really believe what your mother told you? About me calling her a thief?”
“I don’t know…” he murmurs. “I don’t know anything… I don’t think you would. Especially after knowing the truth… I know you aren’t capable of such cold-hearted atrocities. But Mum told me… she told me…And I don’t know.”
I sighed. “Trevor, believe me. I would never call your mother a thief. You told me the exact reason why she became a mail order bride. It was inspiring. I thought what she did was strong and powerful, but when I spoke to her about it she accidentally thought that I had insinuated that she was a thief. I did not, really. You believe me, don’t you?”
Hearing no response, I looked up at Trevor’s face to see him sleeping peacefully.
“Trevor?” I asked, but he was out for the count.
